Resumo:
Poverty is present in developed and underdeveloped nations and has received attention since the mid-twentieth century. From the 1970s, poverty gained prominence in scientific studies in Brazil, which showed changes in the volume and profile of the poor due to the economic transformations that occurred in the country. However, the focus has been given to the more economically developed regions. Consequently, regions such as the Amazon have few works on the subject. In this context, this article aims to analyze poverty and its evolution through the unidimensional approach in the State of Amazonas in the period 2000 to 2010. Among the specific objectives are: to characterize the socioeconomic profile of the Amazonian population; calculate income poverty indicators for immediate regions; and, analyze the behavior of poverty taking into account the specificities of the regions of the state. It used microdata from the 2000 and 2010 demographic censuses. The indicators used were: H index (headcount index) and the poverty gap (IHP). In which they presented positive results in relation to poverty, where the proportion of poor people showed a reduction between 2000 and 2010, as well as the degree of intensity of this poverty.
