This monograph is an investigation into illiteracy in Brazil today and it aims to understand how many illiterate people there are in Brazil today, Embiral Imperatriz – Maranhão. Why they are illiterate and why they still remain in the same circumstances. Let us try to understand why the illiteracy rate is so high today, as we have schools everywhere, also in rural areas. We will also talk about dropout and its causes. Our place of study was the village Embiral, part of the municipality of Imperatriz - MA, where there are several illiterate people to this day. This research was based on bibliography, scientific journal articles, newspaper reports, data from government entities, among other materials, it being a documentary and qualitative research. According to IBGE, there are 11.8 million non-literate people in Brazil. This number of illiterate people only confirms that their weaknesses are enormous. The results of this work show that illiterates are on the fringes of society, set aside by a government that does not value them, because the root of illiteracy is historical.
