The purpose of this work is to analyze the interface of the National System of Nature Conservation Units (SNUC) with the Ecological-Economic Zoning (ZEE), investigating whether the two environmental protection instruments are sufficient for the conservation and use of biodiversity, as well as whether they respect the anthropological patterns related to fishing, resulting from the historical formation and occupation of the area. In this sense, we see that the importance of ZEE lies in the implementation and management of the Conservation Units called Extractive Reserves, one of the essential aspects that encompass the relationship of this program with the SNUC (LIMA, 2006: 154). The research is the result of trips made to the municipality of Curuçá, where the fishing communities of São João do Abade, Andirás, and the Areua, Mariteua and Romana Islands were visited. Interviews were conducted with members of associations, colonies, residents and fishermen from these 5 communities. The universe of informants chosen consists of 58 fishermen, colonized or not, and 25 residents, people connected to the fishermen. A comparison with the Marine Extractive Reserve of Soure, capital of Marajó, where concrete results can already be observed, allowed us to note that Mãe-Grande has been following the same phases of implementation. Decree 13 months after the Marajoara reserve, with 9,598.51ha. more, Mãe-grande is a scenario rich in environmental assets, but still awaiting some of the measures provided for by Law 9.985/00 to become an effective RESEX.
