The discussion also takes into account in what the novel portrays the cultural changes that took place in Indian society as a result of its contact with Western culture, in particular through the English colonization of the subcontinent. A proposta desta dissertação é realizar um estudo acerca da representação da identidade nacional e cultural indiana no romance O deus das pequenas coisas (1998) de Arundhati Roy (1998), por meio de uma análise que investiga a forma como a autora desconstrói e critica a representação da identidade cultural da Índia ainda fundamentada no sistema de castas, ao qual se atribui a antiga origem da estratificação da sociedade indiana.
