Objective: To describe the perceptions regarding the care of family caregivers of dependent elderly. Method: Qualitative study that adopted Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical framework, developed in the city of Palmas, TO, with eight family caregivers of dependent elderly. Data collection took place between February and July 2020, through observation of facts and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis followed Bardin's precepts. Results: The analysis of the caregivers' statements made it possible to identify that care is expressed in the opportunity for retribution and in feelings such as satisfaction, joy and gratitude. That the care process, in addition to performing tasks, often provides well-being. The negative aspects of care are related to feelings of sadness, hurt and frustration, impotence and fear of the finitude of the loved one, causing emotional burden on the caregiver. Conclusion: The act of caring is expressed in affective experiences, and these provoke experiences of moments of joy and difficulties, to the subject who cares. It is evident, therefore, that this clientele also needs to be considered in the care plan of health professionals, as it presents biopsychosocial demands and is routinely exposed to suffering, overload and physical and emotional pain.
