This essay aims to perform a theoretical survey of the main approaches of the regional
economy concerning to theories of agglomeration, centrality, and polarization. They
describe the dynamic mechanism of self-reinforcing resulting from externalities due to
the agglomeration of industries. Therefore, an exploratory methodological tool was used
and by way of literature. The polarization theory alludes to François Perroux and his
approach is about motive power industry and growing center. The agglomeration theory
of productive activities is resultant of the introduction of space in economic analysis.
The centrality shows the organization and hierarchy of space, also features the
formation pattern of the cities’ network and the specialization role of each of them. It is
concluded that the main issue in the analysis regarding the revisited theories are inside
the conflict element, because they tend to intensify inequalities and the exclusionary
character of the production system, although propelling the increase income and
employment in certain areas. |
