The work is based on the Municipality of São Francisco do Brejão - MA, in the 2016 electoral
contest for the Municipal Executive, having as its theme the political preferences of the voter
when he votes for the mayor's choice of the city. The main objective of the present study is to
understand the nature of the most common motivations that define the electoral preferences for
the municipal executive in a small municipality of the state of Maranhão traditionally dominated
by political groups with significant economic power. As for the methodology, this monograph
is of a qualitative nature, since we intend to carry out a research based on a bibliographical
review about the subject, as well as in consultations on primary sources of the Regional
Electoral Tribunal (TSE), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), as well as
academic articles. It was concluded that some hypotheses may be suggested as factors that
would shape preferences: the first is personalism, or those qualities attributed to the candidate
as charisma, honesty, "being a worker", "being competent", etc.; the second is economic power,
that is, the candidate who enjoys a given campaign structure (and manages those resources well)
will stand out from other competitors; third is the idea of the connection (and advantages) of
the candidate to the political field of the State Government.
