According to the WHO this disease has caused up to 1.5 million deaths per year worldwide, DM is considered one of the most common syndromes in both adults and children. Thus, it is extremely important that patients diagnosed with this disease have knowledge about their selfcare. The work sought to identify the knowledge of patients with DM at the José Lúcio Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the city of Aragominas, in the north of Tocantins, describing the different types of diabetes and highlighting the factors that are involved in the diagnosis of the disease, as well as showing the importance of self-care that patients need to stay healthy. The methodology applied was of the qualitative-quantitative type, using forms and information available at the UBS, for the collection of data analyzed later by descriptive statistics. Data from 20 individuals were analyzed, 10 females and 10 males, of which 50% are unaware of their type of diabetes. Regarding the survey of the time that the patient has lived with DM, 60% of the women stated that they lived with the disease for more than 10 years, while 90% of the men answered that they lived with the disease for less than 10 years. In 76.9% the increase in blood glucose was the most reported symptom that leads to the discovery of diabetes. It was observed that 51.2% of registered patients are residents of rural areas, where they are treated by two primary care teams. From this study, we conclude that there is a need to have constant discussions on this topic, in a formal and informal way, highlighting the consequences that this metabolic syndrome has on people's health, but also on their productivity as a citizen. Sabe-se que o Diabetes mellitus (DM) é uma síndrome metabólica crônica que provoca a elevação dos níveis de glicose no sangue, ocasionando graves danos à saúde, podendo inclusive ocasionar a sua morte. De acordo com a OMS esta doença tem causado até 1,5 milhões de óbitos por ano no mundo, a DM é considerada uma das síndromes mais comuns tanto em adultos como em crianças. Assim, é de suma importância que os pacientes diagnosticados com essa doença tenham conhecimentos sobre seus autocuidados. O trabalho buscou identificar os conhecimentos dos pacientes com DM da Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS) José Lúcio na cidade de Aragominas, no norte do Tocantins, descrevendo os diferentes tipos de diabetes e destacando os fatores que estão envolvidos no diagnóstico da doença, assim como mostrando a importância sobre os autocuidados que os pacientes precisam para se manterem saudáveis. A metodologia aplicada foi do tipo quali-quantitativa, com a utilização de formulários e informações disponíveis na UBS, para o levantamento de dados analisados posteriormente por estatística descritiva. Foram analisados dados de 20 indivíduos, sendo 10 do sexo feminino e 10 do masculino dos quais 50% desconhece seu tipo de diabetes. Sobre o levantamento do tempo que o paciente vive com DM, 60% das mulheres afirmaram que vivem mais de 10 anos com a doença, enquanto que a 90% homens responderam que vivem com a doença a menos de 10 anos. Em 76,9% o aumento de glicemia foi o sintoma mais relatado que leva à pessoa ao descobrimento de diabetes. Foi observado 51,2% dos pacientes cadastrados, são moradores da área rural, onde são atendidos por duas equipes de atenção primária.
