Our research objective is to investigate how existential psychology has collaborated to palliative care for people with terminal illness and the care of their families in the Unified Health System. narrative review. In our analysis, we take as a basis the works of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) and their interpreters, as well as authors who discuss the theme of palliative care and the historical process until its proposition. an important bibliographic reference is the works of the physician, nurse and palliative social worker Cicely Saunders. Once the bibliographic research is finished, we conclude that the contributions of the existentialist approach to people in palliative care and in welcoming family members brings relief, autonomy, freedom and understanding of their situation of being-in-the-world. Through this work, it was possible to locate the scarcity of public policies in the Unified Health System aimed at palliative care practices for people with incurable illness. There is a legal provision for its practice, but it is essential that the population is more informed about this legal support and about its benefits to everyone who may need it. Our defense is also for palliative care outside the hospital context, that is, within the family and community, being another action of the Family Health Strategy Program. We hope that our research will encourage the reader to reflect on their own existence, what is in fact valuable to them and the true meaning of their lives. Cuidados Paliativos não são apenas direcionados às pessoas que estão em situação de iminência de morte, mas podem ser entendidos como uma assistência diante de uma enfermidade incurável que ameace à vida, sendo uma prática humanitária, empática e eficaz ao cuidar do próximo por meio da prevenção e do alívio do sofrimento físico, psicológico, social e espiritual. Nosso objetivo de pesquisa consiste em investigar de que forma a psicologia existencial tem colaborado para os cuidados paliativos às pessoas com doença terminal e o acolhimento aos seus familiares no Sistema Único de Saúde. Para tanto, recorremos enquanto estratégia metodológica à pesquisa bibliográfica, classificada como uma revisão narrativa. Em nossa análise, tomamos como base as obras de Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Jean-Paul Sartre (1905- 1980) e seus intérpretes, bem como autores que discutem a temática dos cuidados paliativos e o processo histórico até sua proposição, sendo um referencial bibliográfico importante as obras da médica, enfermeira e assistente social paliativista Cicely Saunders. Findada a pesquisa bibliográfica, concluímos que as contribuições da abordagem existencialista às pessoas em cuidados paliativos e no acolhimento aos familiares traz alívio, autonomia, liberdade e compreensão de sua situação de ser-no-mundo. Por meio deste trabalho foi possível situar a escassez de políticas públicas no Sistema Único de Saúde voltada às práticas de cuidados paliativos às pessoas com enfermidade incurável. Há previsão legal para a sua prática, mas é fundamental que a população seja mais informada deste amparo legal e sobre os seus benefícios a todos que possam precisar. Nossa defesa também é pelo cuidado paliativo fora do contexto hospitalar, ou seja, no seio familiar e comunitário, sendo mais uma ação do Programa Estratégia Saúde da Família.
