This paper aimed to analyze the challenges faced by university mothers, especially
those attending the management courses of the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT).
In this sense, through the theory of social representations it tried to verify the
understanding of the world of the university mothers, especially regarding the
difficulties, the prejudices and the challenges of playing such roles in our society.
Therefore, it was necessary to highlight some theoretical assumptions on themes such as
gender inequality and feminism, portraying the place of women historically and today.
Regarding the approach, this research is qualitative and exploratory, having as
procedures of data collection the bibliographic research and open interviews with
university mothers of UFT management courses. The results highlight the
representations regarding the “adversities and difficulties of being a university mother”;
“Father figure” and his [lack of] responsibilities during the process; the “fear and
prejudice” experienced within the university environment and, above all, within the
classroom; “financial dependence” after facing the need to raise a child and; “family
support / absence” as an important pillar during the university period. Moreover, the
lack of university assistance has sharpened the hardships suffered, as well as an
exhausting journey that makes it impossible to complete higher education regularly. |
