This research addressed the issue of institutional racism within the provisional prison house of
Porto Nacional, with the purpose of confirming the existence or not of institutional racism in
that prison. Considering the above theme, the need was felt to address the historical context of
racism in Brazil, mass incarceration and criminal law as an unequal right. The theme on
screen provided an interdisciplinary look at the subject in question, so that Legal Sociology
and Law intersect in the unveiling of the event of institutional racism within the prison unit
under study. It is perceived that the obstacle of racism is historical, since it permeates from
the period of slavery in relation to blacks, as the question of classes since when humanity
exists, that the relation of possession and power prevails. It is observed that racism manifests
itself in several ways within society, politically interfering in the social relations of
individuals, considering that institutions are organized and commanded by dominant groups
that impetuously any attempt by minority groups to occupy space of power and decision. This
work, in question, had as its methodology the hypothetical deductive method, theoreticalpractical nature, a literature review of the subject in question was carried out, in addition to
visits to the provisional prison house with the purpose of collecting statistical data to carry out
a comparative study of the data from the National Penitentiary Department. At the end of the
research work, it is concluded that there is, in fact, institutional racism in the provisional
prison house of Porto Nacional. |
