Resumo:
This paper aims at demonstrating the evolution of the sugarcane industry in the Central- Northern region of Brazil, specially the state of Goiás, including the area towards Tocantins. By means of a drill-down description of this industry in Brazil, this paper intends to demonstrate how important, vast and full of potential sugarcane is becoming in the states where it’s present. By means of a thorough description of the State of Goiás, along with an analysis based on theories regarding the exiting studies on the agro-industrial facilities that have been originated from the commodity system approach readers will eventually understand the evolution of the sugarcane market in the Central Northern region of the country, assessing the indicators of the sugarcane productive chain. Quantitative models are applied in the assessment of those indicators: first, the factorial analysis of the main components, in an attempt to reduce the number of variables used in multiple regression; while the latter demonstrates how such variables have induced the evolution of this sector during the studied period. The analysis of these indicators and characteristics of the sector will enable the identification of how the sugarcane agro-industry complex’s being evolved in Goiás; from that point it will be possible to assess the potential of the state of Tocantins, the characteristics of which are very similar to those of Goiás. With that said, the exploratory nature of this study is clearly stated, especially regarding the expansion of the sugarcane industry throughout the Brazilian Central Northern region.
