Resumo:
Artisanal fishing is an important activity and is part of the lives of riverbank dwellers and communities throughout Brazil. Many times, this activity, endowed with traditional knowledge and experiences, becomes essential for several groups that depend on fishing for income or consumption. This knowledge is diverse and inherent to the activity. Thus, it is important to understand the knowledge produced about fishing, especially in the Tocantins River, through oral history, taking into account the diversity and importance of knowledge related to fishing activity and its contribution to the production of scientific knowledge. For this purpose, three methodological research bases were used to collect the data presented and discussed in this paper, characterized as bibliographic research, based on the studies of authors such as Freire (1987), Brandão (2004), Gohn (2008), Gadotti (2005), among others; data collection with consultation of publications through Google Scholar about the Tocantins River. This knowledge has been acquired over time through experiences in the practice of fishing and passed on through generations. It was also observed that this knowledge can be lost due to the result of changes in both the environment and the riverine and river-related communities' way of life. Moreover, it was shown how non-formal education is an important instrument of resistance and reaffirmation of groups connected to the river through social movements, associations, colonies, and others.
