This thesis developed and applied a model of technological advance indicators to demonstrate
how innovation in agribusiness can contribute to increase productivity and economic growth in
a region. Based on the related literature, a technological index for agribusiness was developed,
as well as the application of an econometric model to identify the relevance of agribusiness for
the growth of a region. Initially, a bibliographic and data survey was carried out regarding the
outlook of the development of agribusiness in the state of Tocantins, for later application of the
models and elaboration of the technological index of agribusiness. This thesis contributed to
the literature by presenting the evolution of agribusiness and the impact of the sector in a region
inserted in Matopiba, and also established a view of the agribusiness scenario in the state of
Tocantins. Among the main results of the study, it is possible to indicate that, in general,
agribusiness contributed positively to the economic growth of the state of Tocantins. Regarding
the technological development of agribusiness in the state, an evolution was observed in relation
to the period from 2006 to 2017. There were improvements in terms of some technologies, such
as soil preparation and internet availability. On the other hand, technologies considered relevant
for the technological development of the sector did not have an equivalent evolution, such as
the use of irrigation systems, the availability of warehouses and soil amendments. Although the
state has advanced in terms of infrastructure that allows for the development of agribusiness,
there are still bottlenecks that must be resolved. Based on the results achieved, it is expected
that policy makers and other stakeholders in the sector will initiate debates and solutions with
a view to creating the appropriate mechanisms for the process of breaking the current
production paradigm to occur in the state. |
