Resumo:
Violence against women is a serious and recurring social problem in Brazil. The media acting in the process of socialization can influence both the spread of violence and its combat. With regard to violence against women, inadequate journalistic coverage can lead to an intensification of this type of violence. The present dissertation aims to analyze the journalistic coverage of violence against women in Jornal do Tocantins between the years 2015 and 2017. In order to meet the proposal, this research was carried out based on the literature, seeking theoretical references in order to present the general concepts of violence, violence against women and media violence. Also, the procedure of documentary research and content analysis was carried out. The results showed that the cases of violence against women with greater severity or repercussion reach the media and that journalism has the fundamental role of fomenting discussions on this issue, but it is far from contributing to the advancement of gender equality starting from a production of news in the perspective of rights.
