Groundwater is of great importance for urban water supply, so in the municipality of
Juruti, water used for domestic consumption comes entirely from underground
sources. In recent decades, the municipality has been experiencing population growth
as a result of several factors, and the water supply to serve the population must keep
pace with it. The present work aims to survey the volume of water exploited by tubular
wells for urban supply due to population growth, and to conclude whether such
exploitation is occurring appropriately and contributing to the social and environmental
functions of groundwater. For the conceptual elaboration on the topics of groundwater
and tubular wells, a bibliographical research was carried out in the area of
hydrogeology, where the consultation sources were based on books, articles,
magazines and internet searches. To collect well flow data, the Groundwater
Information System was consulted, which is an online database on wells developed by
the Geological Survey of Brazil. Thus, it was concluded that the exploitation of water
present in the subsoil involves large volumes and occurs constantly, with an increase
in recent years, but it is also highlighted the fact that this exploitation is carried out in a
safe way for the population and the environment.
