The principal aim was to describe and analyze the knowledge concerning traditional medicine, focusing on the medicinal uses of faunistic local resources. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews were the main methods used. The research documented the medical uses of 59 species of animals, as well the distinct categories of medical fauna attribution, such as remedies for physical diseases, spiritual diseases, and for hunters. We also discussed the symbolic attributions of the fauna, which is demonstrated as typically Amazonian worldview that appears indistinctly between the domains of nature and culture. The results present more than list of “animals” and their respective uses in local healing, but a rich biocultural patrimony involving social life, the natural world and cosmological life governed by the same categories. The present work highlights the importance of documenting the forest folk wisdom, regarding strategies to solve health problems based on the access to animals useful to humans. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo de cunho etnográfico sobre o conjunto de saberes e práticas culturais dos agroextrativistas da Reserva Extrativista Mapuá, na Ilha do Marajó, estado do Pará, Brasil. O objetivo principal foi descrever e analisar os saberes acerca da medicina tradicional, com foco para os usos destinados aos recursos faunísticos locais. Observação participante e entrevistas semiestruturadas foram os principais métodos utilizados. A pesquisa documentou o uso medicinal de 59 espécies de animais, bem como de categorias distintas de atribuição da fauna medicinal, como os remédios para os males físicos, os remédios para os males espirituais e os remédios de caçador. Também discutiu-se as atribuições simbólicas da fauna, que demonstram uma cosmovisão tipicamente amazônica que figura indistintamente entre os domínios natural e cultural. Os resultados apresentam mais do que listas de ‘bichos’ e seus respectivos usos na cura local, mas um rico patrimônio biocultural que envolve a vida social, o mundo natural e a vida cosmológica regidos pelas mesmas categorias.
