In the light of historical and dialectical materialism as a method of interpretation and analysis, the following methodological procedures are carried out: i) bibliographical review of theoretical and conceptual nature of theories, concepts, categories and notions relevant to the theme in question; ii) bibliographical review of historical-geographical nature related to the territorial formation of the Tapajós sub-region; iii) documentary survey of secondary data referring to the Tapajós sub-region, especially the city of Itaituba; iv) semi-structured interviews with representatives of the municipal government and local social entities, as well as residents living and/or working in the city of Itaituba; v) participant observation; and vi) analysis and systematization of the data collected in the light of the previously defined and revised theoretical framework. Thus, after the implementation of this policy and all the technical systems that resulted from it in the Tapajós sub-region, the city under study experienced an increase in its urban centrality as well profound socio-spatial transformations in its urban environment, evidenced by the reactivation of migration, the growth of the real estate market and the construction industry, the diffusion of new consumption and leisure practices, the contrasts revealed in the intraurban structure and the consequent worsening of inequalities; this fact allows us to conclude that, due to the processes triggered by neo-developmentalist policies, Itaituba asserts itself as an average city in the regional context in which it operates. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Considerando a modernização do território imposta pela política neodesenvolvimentista, essa tese de doutorado objetiva analisar o papel que as cidades intermediárias assumiram no consequente processo de reestruturação urbana ocorrido na região amazônica, tomando-se como exemplo o caso da cidade de Itaituba, na sub-região do Tapajós. À luz do materialismo histórico e dialético como método de interpretação e análise, os seguintes procedimentos metodológicos foram adotados: i) revisão bibliográfica de natureza teórico-conceitual de teorias, conceitos, categorias e noções pertinentes à temática em questão; ii) revisão bibliográfica de cunho histórico-geográfico relacionada à formação territorial da sub-região do Tapajós; iii) levantamento documental de dados secundários referente a sub-região do Tapajós, em especial à cidade de Itaituba; iv) entrevistas semiestruturadas junto a representantes do poder público municipal e das entidades socias locais, além de moradores que vivem e/ou atuam na cidade de Itaituba; v) observação participante; e vi) análise e sistematização dos dados coletados à luz do referencial teórico previamente definido e revisado. Desse modo, observa-se que após a implementação dessa política e de todos os sistemas técnicos que dela foram decorrentes na sub-região do Tapajós, a cidade em estudo tanto conheceu um incremento de sua centralidade urbana quanto apresentou profundas transformações socioespaciais no seu ambiente urbano, evidenciadas a partir da reativação da migração, do crescimento do mercado imobiliário e da construção civil, da difusão de novas práticas de consumo e de lazer, dos contrastes revelados na estrutura intraurbana e do consequente agravamento das desigualdades; fato que permite concluir que, em razão dos processos desencadeados pelas políticas neodesenvolvimentista, Itaituba afirma-se como uma cidade média no contexto regional em que se insere.
