Based on the concept of cultural unity, it analyzes the way in which bridal beliefs and behaviors are formulated, stimulated or repressed having as an interface the decomposition of the codes that make this ritual the main expression of the alliance process in urban segments. Drawing attention to the literature review, the first part of the work emphasizes the plurality of interpretive cut-outs and the relevance of enga-gement as a category of analysis, whether within contemporary rituals or the interpre-tation of the alliance in kinship studies. This part of the thesis is also dedicated to iden-tifying the values, processes and symbols that regulate the choice of engagement as a type of relationship in the urban world, adopting, as a source of reflection, the contri-butions of Thales de Azevedo and the vocabulary that permeates their meanings in social networks, press and cinema. The second part of the thesis emphasizes the in-terlocution with the subjects, having the same occurred from interviews conducted as bride and groom in the city of Belém, Teresina and Brasília. Its purpose is to describe the process by which bridal codes are incorporated into the biography and socialization of the interlocutors, taking into account their role as agents and interpreters of this experience. The third part, finally, explores the mediation carried out by the market and the Catholic Church, which, acting as codifying institutions, discipline, respectively, the symbols around the nuptial ritualization and the values and meanings related to the conjugal identity. This approach is based on ethnographic research conducted at Bridal Fairs and Marriage Preparation Meetings ("engagement courses") in the cities of Be-lém and Teresina. Esta tese tem como objetivo compreender o lugar do noivado e dos ritos pré-nupciais na teoria antropológica. Adotando como escopo o conceito de unidade cultural, a mesma analisa o modo como as crenças e os comportamentos nupciais são formula-dos, estimulados ou reprimidos tendo como interface a decomposição dos códigos que fazem deste ritual a principal expressão do processo de aliança em segmentos urbanos. Chamando atenção para a revisão bibliográfica, a primeira parte do trabalho enfatiza a pluralidade de recortes interpretativos e a relevância do noivado como ca-tegoria de análise, seja no âmbito dos rituais contemporâneos, seja para a interpreta-ção da aliança nos estudos do parentesco. Esta parte da tese também se dedica a identificar os valores, processos e símbolos que regulam a escolha do noivado como um tipo de relacionamento no mundo urbano, adotando, como fonte de reflexão, as contribuições de Thales de Azevedo e o vocabulário que permeia seus significados nas redes sociais, na imprensa e no cinema. A segunda parte da tese enfatiza a inter-locução com os sujeitos, tendo a mesma se dado a partir de entrevistas realizadas como noivos e noivas nas cidades de Belém, Teresina e Brasília. Seu principal obje-tivo é descrever o processo através do qual os códigos nupciais são incorporados à biografia e socialização dos interlocutores, levando-se em conta o papel dos mesmos como agentes e intérpretes desta experiência. A terceira parte, por fim, explora a me-diação protagonizada pelo mercado e a igreja católica que, atuando como instituições codificadoras, disciplinam, respectivamente, os símbolos em torno da ritualização nup-cial e os valores e significados relativos à identidade conjugal. Esta abordagem se pauta em pesquisa etnográfica realizada em Feiras de Noivas e Encontros de Prepa-ração para o Casamento ("cursos de noivos") nas cidades de Belém e Teresina.
