Understanding this interpretive action as a diegetic process, it seeks to reflect on the validity of the interpretive method, on the political relationship this method has with reality and with its own effectiveness. In general, the article oposes diegetic narrative to the dialetic one. The first one plays a hermeneutic, or better, understanding and interpretive narrative pattern. The second, meanwhile, is focused on the requirement of an epistemological surveillance of the image, a requirement of the order of description, necessarily objectivist. O artigo discute o ethos da ação interpretativa na realização do filme etnográfico e, a partir dela, a natureza do trabalho com imagens na pesquisa social. Compreendendo essa ação interpretativa como um processo diegético, procura-se refletir sobre a validade do método interpretativo, sobre a relação política que ele mantém com a realidade e com sua própria eficácia. Em termos gerais, o artigo opõe a narrativa diegética à narrativa, por assim dizer, dialética. A primeira reproduz um padrão narrativo hermenêutico, ou melhor, compreensivo e interpretativo. A segunda, por sua vez, está centrada na exigência de uma vigilância epistemológica da imagem, uma exigência da ordem da descrição, necessariamente objetivista.
