According on the official documents, newspapers, photographies, thesis, dissertations, oral speeches were analysed the actions of residentes (dwellers) fishermen and fisherwomen in relation (face) to the changes caused by the highway and the threats to their ways of life. As a result, we can say that fisher(wo)men, instead of the commom sense usually said (would say), are aware of the transformations of their time and nature, they produce/create adaptation strategies, atualyzing (updating) their ecological knwoledge, they accept or not the inovation of “modernity” according to their business (interests), they create complex relationships with the society around and with nature, they participate in trade network that are not always efficiency, they apropriate laws and languages outside their cultural universe and organize themselves politically to protect their territory and their ways of life according to current legislation. Esta tese investiga a agência de pescadores e pescadoras frente aos impactos socioambientais da construção da rodovia PA-458 e às mudanças geográficas do processo de erosão e avanço do mar na ilha de Ajuruteua. Com base em documentos oficiais, jornais, fotografias, teses, dissertações e relatos orais foram analisadas as ações de moradores, lideranças locais e pescadores e pescadoras em relação às mudanças provocadas pela rodovia e às ameaças ao seu modo de vida. Conclui-se que os pescadores e pescadoras, ao contrário do que se costuma afirmar, estão atentos às transformações do seu tempo e da natureza, criam estratégias de adaptação, atualizando seus saberes, práticas e crenças, produzem cotidianamente novos conhecimentos ecológicos, aceitam ou rejeitam as inovações da “modernidade” de acordo com seus interesses, estabelecem relações complexas com a sociedade circundante e com a natureza, participam de redes de comércio nem sempre desfavoráveis, se apropriam de leis e linguagens fora do seu universo cultural e se organizam politicamente para defender seu território e seu modo de vida de acordo com a legislação vigente.
