It presents outstanding characteristic and typical of the Amazon area, offering a not very explored natural deferential, the phenomenon of the “pororoca.” In that sense, and inside of that regional context, the work looked for to investigate the contribution of the tourism for the maintainable development of São Domingos do Capim, starting from the “it surfs in the pororoca.” For so much, it was necessary to lift the pertinent bibliography to the sustainable tourism; to define the regional and local partner-space organization of São Domingos do Capim; to investigate the social actors perception and its role in the current process of tourist development to the light of the paradigm of the sustainable; finally to formulate some maintainable proposals to give subsidies to the local and regional public politics in the section. The methodological investigation was looked for in the empiric research, in a quantitative and qualitative approach, and in the paradigm of the sustainable. In the analysis of the regional and local partner-space organization, lacks were detected in several levels, from basic infrastructure to conflicts of order partner-politics in the maintenance of the power of the dominant elites. In the investigation of the social actors perception, the civil society said that the benefits resulting from “tourism” they are still few. Being added to that aspect, there is pressing of planning of the activity returned to the regional characteristics and local. But for that he/she should improve the conditions of life the population firstly and also the possibility to give them productive alternatives. Meanwhile not if effective, the tourism appears as more a local socioeconomic possibility. The partnership among community, non government organizations, teaching institutions, publics sector’s (Federal, State and Municipal) and the private, if considered initiative its contributions and suggestions, cannot to increase the economy from the position, be through the incentive to new enterprises, opening of work positions, incentive the other alternatives of income as the craft and the tourist services, as well as, educational campaigns to influence and to raise to value of the culture. For that, they should be thought strategies of local development in which among is contemplated the several modalities the ecoturism. Na Região Norte (Estado do Pará), localiza-se o município de São Domingos do Capim. Apresenta características marcantes e típicas da região amazônica, oferecendo um diferencial natural pouco explorado, o fenômeno da “pororoca”. Nesse sentido e dentro desse contexto regional, o trabalho buscou investigar a contribuição do turismo para o desenvolvimento sustentável de São Domingos do Capim-PA, a partir do “surfe na pororoca”. Para tanto, foi necessário levantar a bibliografia pertinente ao turismo sustentável; definir a organização sócio-espacial regional e local do município; investigar a percepção dos atores sociais e o seu papel no atual processo de desenvolvimento turístico, à luz do paradigma da sustentabilidade; caracterizar a oferta e a demanda turística e, por fim, formular algumas propostas sustentáveis para dar subsídios às políticas públicas locais e regionais no setor. A investigação metodológica foi buscada na pesquisa empírica, numa abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa e no paradigma da sustentabilidade. Na análise da organização sócio-espacial regional e local, foram detectadas carências em diversos níveis, desde infra-estrutura básica a conflitos de ordem sócio-políticas na manutenção do poder das elites dominantes. Na investigação da percepção dos atores sociais, a sociedade civil disse que os benefícios advindos do “turismo” ainda são pífios. Somando-se a esse aspecto, há premência de planejamento da atividade voltado às características regionais e locais. Mas, para isso, devem-se melhorar primeiramente as condições de vida da população e também, a possibilidade de dar-lhe alternativas produtivas. Enquanto isso não se efetiva, surge o turismo como mais uma possibilidade sócio- econômica local. A parceria entre comunidade, organizações não governamentais, instituições de ensino, poder público (Federal, Estadual e Municipal) e a iniciativa privada, se consideradas suas contribuições e sugestões, poderão, sobejamente, incrementar a economia do lugar, seja através do estímulo a novos empreendimentos, abertura de postos de trabalho, estímulo a outras alternativas de renda como o artesanato e os serviços turísticos, como também campanhas educativas de sensibilização e valorização da cultura. Para isso, deverão ser pensadas estratégias de desenvolvimento local, nas quais se contemple dentre as diversas modalidades, o ecoturismo.
