This paper examines the context surrounding sub-national states which form the Brazilian Amazon area. Peculiarities of the political system of the region are discussed, as well as their relation with recent constitutional provisions (Federal Constitution of 1988), and their consequences in the setting up of representative political institutions. Our goal is to demonstrate regional particularities and influences derived
from the construction of the Brazilian
federation. However, it presents the same problems of the federation, regarding
political and party structures, and the
institutional developments. We conclude by
stating that the absence of regional solidarity hinders the participation of Amazon states in the national system. |
