Resumo:
This dissertation discusses the transformation of the Amazon region’s monetary system, where “natural coins” were widely and officially used as currency, during the first half of the eighteenth century. It is based on primary sources from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino and published materials, such as the Anais da Biblioteca Nacional and the Anais do Arquivo Público do Pará. It explains the reasons why metal coins arrived and circulated so late in the region, and the consequences of the use of “natural coins” for the region’s society and economy.
