The present dissertation treats about the intellectuals's acting (poets, journalists, militants, students, folklorists, anthropologists) and popular artists in the formation of the called “MPB”, Popular Brazilian Music, in the state of Pará. Between middles of the decade of 1960 and of 1970, intellectual sectors of the middle class from Pará initiated a great mobilization into the sense of updating the popular music produced in Belém to the political and esthetic discussions that the MPB was carrying out in the remainder of the country. Festivals were carried out, groups of poetry and music appeared, political actings were mixed by bohemian postures and great artistic activity. The new intellect was looking at the same time to do a modern music ruled, but based on elements of the popular culture from Pará or amazônida. Amid new artists that became from these sectors of the society, a revision of the memory of the popular music was done and ancient names were incorporated to one tradition. At the same time, the carimbó, which up to that time was limited to the cities and communities from the country, appears in Belém like a musical explosion and becomes a music consumed by the radios, TVs and the industry of the disc. The urbanization of this type of regional folklore leads to a spacious discussion about authenticity, market and cultural identity of the Amazonian region and of the Pará individually. In this process, artists of popular extracts enter on the stage giving their contribution to the popular musician of the North. The spacious discussion in the newspapers about the carimbó (his authenticity or his degeneration in front of the market) adds up the actings of the intellectual young people. In this complex context of multiple actings, appears a kind of MPB with regional forms.
