Gentrification here means to transform public spaces into consumption places, leading to the removal of people and, with them, the sociability that gives identity to these places. Public spaces focused here are the ports of Palha and Açaí and the Ver-o-Peso market. They are important places for popular life in Belém, mostly for the black people who use them. Thousands of people comute daily between these places in the continent and the many islands on the other side of the river. Gentrification tends to remove these people, most of them poor, and their activities to more distant areas. As the popular saying goes, ‘poverty has a color’. People resist urban developments that exclude black people. Nevertheless, racial factor isn’t acknowledged as contributing to segregation nor the racial argument is present in resistance discourse. Put together the cultural dimension and the racial factor recognized they would add significant weight to the capacity of resistance and insurgence among this population affected by the changes. This is a point the article raises. Em Belém, intervenções urbanísticas na orla da cidade, conduzidas pela prefeitura com recursos do Banco Mundial, projetam a requalificação dos espaços públicos no sentido de transformá-los em ambientes de consumo. Gentrificação é o caso, e significa retirar pessoas e com elas sociabilidades que dão identidade aos lugares. Os portos da Palha e do Açaí e o Ver-o-Peso são espaços públicos de grande relevância para a cidade e, principalmente, para a população de pretos e pardos, os negros e os indígenas mestiços que transitam e fazem transitar mercadorias entre as ilhas e o continente. Milhares de pessoas cruzam rotineiramente entre esses lugares no continente e as várias ilhas do outro lado do rio. Contudo, quem promove as intervenções urbanísticas quer remover a vida popular dos seus lugares. Como se costuma dizer, a pobreza tem cor. Eles resistem à remoção, mas a questão racial não está posta nesses lugares. Reconhece-se a segregação social, entretanto ela não é vista também como racial. A gramática racial não está presente na resistência contra os projetos excludentes. Somadas aos interesses de classe, a dimensão cultural e a luta pelo reconhecimento racial acrescentariam um conteúdo significativo na capacidade de resistência e insurgência dessas populações. O presente artigo levanta essa questão.
