The methodology consisted of field research, application of standard questionnaires, observation and discussion in group. Farmers gave preference to some perennial cultures and forest species for intercropping, and the main explication for the introduction of species in their fields was economic gain and social behavior. Multifaceted thinking is seen in the choice of agriculture products and management options, resulting in each property having a combination of different agricultural systems that are adapted to local conditions. The farmer knows better than anyone else how to determine the ideal combination for his agricultural system. The study shows the agrosocial and socialcultural trajectory of the farmers and hypothesis are advanced on what would imply the adoption of agroforestry systems in family agriculture. A systemic approach can be very useful in understanding the relationships and social processes that are important aspects of the rural and agrarian question. Em 2005, foi conduzida uma pesquisa sobre sistemas agroflorestais (SAF), tendo como estudo de caso os agricultores familiares do Projeto de Assentamento Arapuã-Simeira, no município de Garrafão do Norte, estado do Pará, Brasil. O propósito foi descrever e sistematizar as características agrossociais dos agricultores familiares e suas experiências e percepções sobre SAF. A metodologia constou de visitas a campo, aplicação de questionários padronizados, observação e discussão em grupo. Os agricultores privilegiam algumas espécies perenes e florestais para o plantio consorciado. A principal explicação para a introdução de espécies no sistema foi os motivos econômicos e o comportamento social. Percebe-se uma complexidade na escolha de produtos e no manejo agrícola em cada propriedade, resultando numa combinação de diferentes sistemas agrícolas apropriados às condições locais. Os agricultores demonstraram capacidade de decisão sobre a combinação ideal para cada sistema agrícola. A pesquisa mostra a trajetória agrossocial e sociocultural dos agricultores e faz especulações sobre os possíveis desafios que implicariam a adoção de SAF na agricultura familiar.
