The factors affecting the behaviour of Leishmania in sandflies are described against the background of our knowledge of the basic hfe cycles o f suprapylarian and p e r i p y l a r i a n species. A diagrammatic representation is used to tabulate a variety of known and possible interactions between parasite and sandfly based on our knowledge of other trypanosomatid-insect associations. The physical interactions between Leishmania and sandfly are described and the ?reas of productive f u r t h e r study highlighted. The n a t u r a l Leishmania-ssLn?r?y combination, L . amazonensis in Lutzomyia flaviscutellata, is discussed i n the l i g h t of recent results and compared w i t h earlier findings on host parasite associations. The f i n d i ng of promastigote infections i n the oesophageal d i v e r t i c u l um is described in t h i s system; the significance of such a f i n d i n g is unknown. This observation is discussed i n the l i g h t of present ideas on the relationships between Leishmania promastigotes and carbohydrates, carbohydrates on i n h i b i t i o n of agglutination, insect lectins and Leishmania transmission. I t is emphasised t h a t the interactions w i l l be complex and species specific, w h i l s t modulated by carbohydrates derived f r om a variety of plant sources. Generalisations about such interactions i n the field may be d i f f i c u l t to predict.
