Classification of archaeological ceramics was a frequently debated subject among archaeologists working in the Amazon during the decades of 1950-70 and reflects competing hypotheses of occupation of the region. The different interpretations of the archaeological remains derived from distinct classificatory parameters. This article provides an overview of the discussions about the methods of ceramic analysis in the Amazon, contextualizing such historical and theoretical approaches. It also aims to present the methodology that has been used to interpret the chronological and stratigraphic sequences of
archaeological contexts in the central Amazon and adjacencies. To illustrate this, we present the typological data from Jacuruxi site, Manacapuru/AM, which challenges the interpretative parameters adopted and point to the necessity of an open contextual approach. |
