The work being developed is part of two more comprehensive projects: 1) Prehistoric and Ethno-Historic Population of the Tapajós Microregion and its Relationship to the Environment. 2) The Oiapoque Microregion: Ethno-Archaeological Study of the Cultures of the Cunani River. -1) At the level of the first project, a bibliographical study of the Tapajós region was carried out as a basis for the development of the research. We continued analyzing in the laboratory the material from the Tapajós region collected during the first fieldwork carried out in 1992. -2) For the second project (Cunani Region) the Aristé Collection was analyzed, which currently consists of 17 whole pieces, with emphasis on the morphological study and decoration techniques. -1) Next we will present the results of the analysis of the ceramic material from the Tapajós region. This material comes from surface collections from five archeological sites, comprising 177 fragments. The surface treatment, texture, types of antiplastic in the paste and decoration techniques were analyzed. In addition, the analysis of lithic material and wood material is under development. -2) The results of the analysis of the Cunani or Aristé Collection have allowed us to establish a morphological classification, determining two major categories: Open and Closed vessels, and establishing various forms within each category. From the results obtained in the analysis of the material from the Middle Tapajós, it was essential to carry out a second fieldwork in April 1994 in order to select the sites which will be excavated this year, given the archeological importance of the region and the danger of damage to them). |
