Basic surveys on geographic distribution, biology or ecology are essential for long-term conservation of these animals. The study area (approximately from Oiapoque to the Gulf of Maranhão - Amapá, Pará and Maranhão) is referred to in taxonomy only as a definitive limit, disregarding ecological factors influencing the geographical distribution of monkeys. Reviews in systematics, ecology, behavior and conservation, as well as the inventory and mapping of localities recorded in the literature and scientific collections have allowed the identification of the forms of Amazonian primates that occur along the coast, their habitats and conservation status, thus relating their geographic distribution with coastal vegetation formations and environmental protection areas. The still preliminary results indicated the presence of 21 primate forms in the area (about 12% of the Brazilian forms), representing 10 genera (62% of the Brazilian genera), some of which with very restricted distribution, including 11 endemic to Brazil. A área litorânea da Amazônia abriga representantes da maioria dos 14 gêneros de primatas que ocorrem em toda região, muitos dos quais endêmicos e/ou em situação de risco. Levantamentos básicos em distribuição geográfica, biologia ou ecologia são essenciais para a conservação a longo prazo destes animais. A área de estudo (aproximadamente do Oiapoque até o golfo maranhense - Amapá, Pará e Maranhão) é referenciada em taxonomia apenas como um limite definitivo, desconsiderando fatores ecológicos influentes na distribuição geográfica dos macacos. Revisões em sistemática, ecologia, comportamento e conservação, bem como o inventário e o mapeamento das localidades registradas na literatura e acervos científicos, têm permitido a identificação das formas de primatas amazônicos que ocorrem no litoral, seus habitats e status de conservação, relacionando assim, a sua distribuição geográfica com formações vegetais costeiras e com áreas de proteção ambiental.
