Hymenaea oblongifolia is a tree species from the terra firme forest of the Eastern Amazon. Its fruit is a berry, with one to four seeds dispersed probably by terrestrial rodents, such as the agouti (Dasyprocta sp). A small population of the species is being studied in the Mocambo Forest Reserve (Belém, PA), a residual area of little disturbed terra firme forest, located in the CPATU/EMBRAPA area. This study aims primarily to identify the patterns of distributions and abundance of this species at three regeneration sites: a) area under the canopy of H. oblongifolia; b) understory area outside the canopy of H. oblongifolia matrices; c) areas of natural clearings. The issues examined aim to answer questions about the reproductive performance of the species and its persistence in the Mocambo area, a site pressured by hunting activity, where its dispersers have probably been removed. The pattern observed suggests that, in the long term, the population structure may be modified and this is probably related to the absence of its dispersers (CNPq/MPEG). |
