The quality of water resources is a factor that directly affects the environment and the health of the population. This aspect is the object of the AQUALIVITA project, showing that in the area of influence of the Aurá landfill could be occurring a leachate arrival to the waters of the Aurá and Guamá streams and rivers. Detailing was developed with field campaigns and laboratory measurements. Measurements of pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, served to indicate the effects of waste slurry on natural waters. Dissolved oxygen analyses were developed in the laboratory by collecting and preserving samples at various points, with and without the influence of the slurry at high and low tide. By the dissolved oxygen measurements it was evidenced serious demand of values. In some points, these reach 6.2 ppm of O.D, while in areas near the landfill they fall to 3.3 ppm, a value close to the limit required by CONAMA for the type of rivers (which can be treated for supply). This degradation process, with the sharp decrease in dissolved oxygen, is due to the demand for biological or chemical activity (resulting from the arrival of leachate). More advanced studies are the object of the continuity of the work, with training in BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), TOC (Total Organic Carbon), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and dissolved organic substances analyses. Besides this, training will take place as from July, with the collaboration of researchers from the Evandro Chagas Institute, and educational campaigns with the population, with emphasis on the protection of the water resources in view of the contamination by the launching of untreated sewage.
