Little is known about the existing anura fauna in the Carajás region, municipality of Parauapebas, Pará. Previous studies of the herpetofauna of the region were restricted to reptiles collected in the Serra Norte area, between the Itacaiúnas and Parauapebas rivers (Cunha et. AI, 1985). The objective of this study is to obtain data on the taxonomic characteristics of the species of anuran amphibians of that region, many of which lack precise descriptions for their recognition, as well as more detailed studies of their biology. The study started with specimens collected in the Salobo Project's area of influence, which were re-identified using the specialized literature and by comparison with species from MPEG's Herpetological Collection, and then registered and incorporated into the collection. Total length measurements (rostrum-cloaca) were taken and the presence/absence of taxonomic characteristics, such as the presence of tubercles, folds, and coloration patterns were observed. The sexing of specimens was performed by observing the presence of coanas and nuptial calluses and/or by examining the gonods of preserved specimens. As a result of six months of activities, 384 specimens were observed, totaling 43 species, distributed in 6 families. The family Hylidae showed the highest diversity of species(18), followed by the families Leptodactylidae( 13), Bufonidae(5), Dedrobatydae( 4), Microhylidae(2) and Pipidae( I).Among the 43 species observed, at least 7(-16%) have undefined taxonomic status. More detailed observations will focus on these species as studies continue. |
