The work we are initiating deals with the different forms of degradation of the ecosystem, either by natural factors (accentuated salinization of the soil and water, attack by moths, erosion, etc.) or by human actions (opening of roads, logging, etc.). The 36 km transect between the city of Bragança and Ajuruteua beach is a good example of these changes. It is part of the Coastal Studies Program of the Emilio Goeldi Museum of Pará and is supported by a JICA expert. The methodology includes analysis of the specialized literature on mangrove ecosystems, the conditions necessary for their development in terms of climate, geographical position, sediments, water flows, etc., the adaptation of flora and fauna, the different types of mangrove forests, their vital functions, and their contribution to the food chain. These are essential conditions for the ecosystem to be able to fully fulfill its functions in terms of social use, which is pressing for the populations. The methodology includes, besides the analysis of the critical mass, field work (not yet started) includes the study of botanical parameters (vegetation structure) and sediment logic, the constitution of an image bank, and the presentation of papers in local events. The results obtained are still preliminary, in the form of reading sheets, work sessions with the supervisor and researchers from the CCTE, and presentation of internal seminars. O ecossistema de manguezais é um dos mais importantes em áreas úmidas costeiras e tem funções primordiais para a cadeia trófica e para o uso social dos recursos pelas populações tradicionais. O trabalho que estamos iniciando trata das diferentes formas de degradação do ecossistema, seja por fatores naturais (salinização acentuada dos solos e águas, ataque por mariposas, erosão, etc.) como por ações antrópicas (abertura de estradas, retirada de madeira, etc.). O transecto de 36 km entre a cidade de Bragança e a praia de Ajuruteua constitui um bom exemplo destas alterações. Ele se insere no Programa de Estudos Costeiros do Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi e tem apoio de um perito da JICA. A metodologia inclui análise da bibliografia especializada sobre ecossistema de manguezais, as condições necessárias para seu desenvolvimento em termos de clima, posição geográfica, sedimentos, fluxos hídricos, etc., a adaptação da flora e da fauna, os diferentes tipos de bosques de manguezais, suas funções vitais e seu aporte para a cadeia trófica. Estas são condições essenciais para que o ecossistema possa cumprir plenamente suas funções em termos de uso social, premente para as populações. A metodologia compreende, além da análise da massa crítica, trabalhos de campo (ainda não iniciados) inclui estudo dos parâmetros botânicos (estrutura da vegetação) e sedimento lógicos, constituição de um banco de imagens e apresentação de trabalhos em eventos locais.
