The present work is a continuation of the research carried out in the village of Beja since August 2000, through the Scientific Initiation Program - PIBIC. The study is part of the research line "Natural resources and sustainability strategy" under the guidance of Dr. Lourdes Gonçalves Furtado, in the scope of the RENAS/MPEG project, and in the RENAS projects IMEGAM/NAEA/UFPA. The work aims to point out the changes arising from the Albrás/Alunorte industries, located in Barcarena-PA, in the village of Beja, as well as the alternatives presented by the fishermen to minimize some problems such as the lack of fish. For the ethnographic study, interviews with the fishermen, photographic records, and weekly orientations were carried out. It was registered that fishing in the village has been practiced more with nets and marlin and that its importance is for family and local subsistence. Because it does not generate profits, many fishermen who live only from fishing are unable to buy or maintain the equipment they need. The changes observed in the village are related to the growing number of fishermen, causing a larger catch of fish; the implementation of more resistant engines and fishing materials by some polyvalent fishermen, financed by third parties, promoting inequality among the group. In this context, to minimize the problems, the fishermen point to measures like: an awareness campaign for the use of fishing nets; founding a fishermen's association; building a refrigerator; organizing community projects that aim for the adequate management of natural resources. Finally, in the area of Vila de Beja, theft of fishing materials is occurring; lack of garbage collection and improper disposal of sand on the beach by the local municipality, contributing to the silting up of the Capim River, and the removal of fish.
