To this end, readings in Archival and Oral History were carried out, which allowed the preparation of the questionnaire, used for the interviews with different employees and users of the institutions visited; the direct observation of the environments was also important for the analysis. Seven archives were visited (Cherrnont's Registry, Pará Public Archive, General Archive of the TJE, General Archive of UFPA, ITERPA's Archive and Emílio Goeldi Museum's Archive) and three libraries (Arthur Vianna Public Library, TJE Library and Central Library of UFPA). All the institutions present difficulties in the maintenance of their collections. The budgets destined to these institutions are meager, which prevents the acquisition of materials needed for proper conservation (dehumidifiers, devices for adequate air conditioning, quality paper, adequate boxes, shelves, temperature gauges etc.) and makes it difficult to hire specialized labor; inhospitable climate, insufficient or non-existent specialized labor and security vulnerability are some issues that threaten the collections of Belen's archives. The archives, both public and private, are victims of a mentality, still present among public and private administrators, that considers archives to be something costly and unimportant; because of this, important documents have already been lost to the Amazonian and Pará history. If appropriate measures are not taken, significant document losses will continue to happen, since most of the archives do not offer adequate conditions for storage and conservation. Este trabalho visa a identificar as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos arquivos belenenses na manutenção de seus acervos, visto que os mesmos possuem documentos essenciais para a História da Amazônia e do Pará. Para tanto, foram feitas leituras em Arquivística e História oral, que permitiram a elaboração do questionário, utilizado para as entrevistas com diferentes funcionários e usuários das instituições visitadas; a observação direta dos ambientes também foi importante para a análise. Foram visitados sete arquivos (Cartório Cherrnont, Arquivo Público do Pará, Arquivo Geral do TJE, Arquivo Geral da UFPA, Arquivo do ITERPA e Arquivo do Museu Emílio Goeldi) e três bibliotecas (Biblioteca Pública Arthur Vianna, Biblioteca do TJE e Biblioteca Central da UFPA). Todas as instituições apresentam dificuldades para a manutenção de seus acervos. Os orçamentos destinados a estas instituições são parcos, o que impede a aquisição de materiais necessários à conservação adequada (desumidificadores, aparelhos para a climatização adequada, papel de qualidade, caixas adequadas, estantes, medidores de temperatura etc.) e dificulta a contratação de mão-de-obra especializada; clima inóspito, insuficiência ou inexistência de mão-de-obra especializada e vulnerabilidade da segurança são alguns quesitos que ameaçam os acervos dos arquivos belenenses. Os arquivos, tanto público como privados, são vítimas de uma mentalidade, ainda presente entre administradores públicos e privados, que entende ser o arquivo algo oneroso e pouco importante; por conta disso, já foram perdidos documentos importantes para a história amazônica e paraense.
