However, it is observed that environmental education in the most critical perception, such as rural education, is in a pedagogical proposal against hegemonic making it often invisible in the school space. In view of this problem, the present work aims to characterize the current development of environmental education in the final grades of elementary schools in the countryside in the municipality of Castanhal-PA and propose a project to extend critical environmental education with an agro-ecological approach applied to the school space from the local community. The research has a qualitative focus, being composed by bibliographical research and action research. Initially, we sought to reflect on the development of environmental education in rural schools, identifying the methodological and pedagogical proposals and the main topics addressed in the national scientific productions on the theme. In this stage, the research source was the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) database from 2007 to 2016. The field research was carried out in three schools located in the rural area of the municipality of Castanhal in the state of Pará, Brazil. 2016 and 2017. As a result, the bibliographic research pointed to the existence of an expressive number of works developed from a more conservationist perspective, causing a loss in the intrinsic emancipatory potential of critical environmental education. Regarding the field research, it was verified that environmental education in the municipality of Castanhal has been developed from the conservative perspective, not covering the environmental complexity as part of the discussions in the schools. Finally, it was concluded that the proximity and interaction between the institution of professional and technological technological training, rural schools and the local community make possible new perspectives and meanings for the rural area, as well as making pedagogical activity more dynamic through dialogue and of field practices. A educação ambiental como uma temática transversal no currículo escolar é uma possibilidade para reflexão sobre uma diversidade de problemáticas ambientais. No entanto, observa-se que a educação ambiental na percepção mais crítica, como a educação do campo, encontra-se em uma proposta pedagógica contra hegemônica fazendo com que seja, muitas vezes, invisibilizada no espaço escolar. Diante esta problemática, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar o atual desenvolvimento da educação ambiental nas séries finais do ensino fundamental das escolas no campo no município de Castanhal- PA e propor um projeto de extensão em educação ambiental crítica com enfoque agroecológico aplicado ao espaço escolar a partir da comunidade local. A pesquisa tem um enfoque qualitativo, sendo composta pela pesquisa bibliográfica e a pesquisa-ação. Inicialmente, buscou-se refletir sobre o desenvolvimento da educação ambiental nas escolas rurais, identificando as propostas metodológicas, pedagógicas e as principais temáticas abordadas nas produções científicas nacionais sobre o tema. Nesta etapa, a fonte da pesquisa foi a base de dados the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) no período de 2007 a 2016. A pesquisa de campo foi desenvolvida em três escolas localizadas na área rural do município de Castanhal no estado do Pará, nos anos de 2016 e 2017. Como resultados, a pesquisa bibliográfica apontou a existência de um expressivo número de trabalhos desenvolvidos em uma perspectiva mais conservacionista, ocasionando uma perda no potencial emancipatório intrínseco da educação ambiental crítica. Em relação à pesquisa de campo constatou-se que a educação ambiental no município de Castanhal vem sendo desenvolvida prioritamente a partir da vertente conservadora, não abrangendo a complexidade ambiental como parte das discussões nas escolas. Por fim, concluiu-se que a proximidade e interação entre a instituição de formação tecnológica profissional e tecnológica, as escolas rurais e a comunidade local possibilitam novos olhares e significados para o espaço rural, como também, dinamiza o fazer pedagógico a partir dos diálogos e das práticas de campo.
