When detecting abnormalities, it acts directly on an equipment or a system, removing from operation the equipment or components involved with the abnormality, in addition to triggering alarm circuits when necessary. The protection systems are essential for the equipment integrity conservation belonging to the electrical systems and for the maintenance of its proper functioning. In this sense, it is fundamental that the protection relays provide a planned performance, making important the process of evaluating the performance of these devices. Several benefits have been incorporated into the protection systems through the introduction of digital relays, such as reliability and the possibility of programming more complex protection functions. These benefits were also accompanied by the evolution of relay performance evolution methods. This work shows the characteristics and the evaluation performance procedures of digital relays. Thereunto, the performance of the RET 670 digital relay manufactured by ABB was studied, tested and analyzed. For the tests with the protection device, real parameterization data applied into protection system of a metallurgical plant, located in the southeast of the state of Pará, connected in the National Interconnected System, were used. Based on these data, differential function tests were performed. To improve the understanding of the evaluation process, this work also presents a review regarding the relays and its protection main functions. Relés de proteção são dispositivos que vigiam o Sistema Elétrico de Potência, comparando os parâmetros reais com o seu pré-ajuste. Ao detectar anormalidades, atua diretamente sobre um equipamento ou um sistema, retirando de operação os equipamentos e/ou componentes envolvidos com a anormalidade, além de acionar circuitos de alarme quando necessário. Os sistemas de proteção são fundamentais para a conservação da integridade dos equipamentos pertencentes aos sistemas elétrico e para a manutenção do bom funcionamento dos mesmos. Neste sentido, é fundamental que os relés de proteção forneçam um desempenho planejado, tornando importante o processo de análise da performance desses dispositivos. Com a introdução dos relés digitais vários benefícios foram incorporados aos sistemas de proteção, tais como a confiabilidade e a possibilidade de programação de funções de proteção mais complexas. Tais benefícios vieram acompanhados também da evolução dos métodos de análise da performance dos relés. Este trabalho apresenta as características e os procedimentos de análise da performance de relés digitais. Para isso, foi estudado, testado e analisado a performance do relé digital RET 670, fabricado pela ABB. Para os testes com o dispositivo de proteção foram utilizados dados reais de parametrização aplicados no sistema de proteção de uma metalúrgica localizada no sudeste do estado do Pará, ligada ao Sistema Interligado Nacional. Com base nestes dados foram feitos testes com a função diferencial.
