Inserted in this context, is the phytoplankton community, which forms the basis of the aquatic food chain. The study of the composition and temporal distribution of such a community is crucial to understand the main mechanisms of functioning of aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to characterize the structure and dynamics of phytoplankton community and its spatial-temporal variation along the estuary of the river Marapanim (Pará, Brazil). To achieve this goal were collected during the September/2006 and February/2007 in two sampling profiles distributed throughout the estuary. Samples for the qualitative study were obtained from trawls horizontal subsurface water, while those for the quantification of chlorophyll was obtained through direct collection. The structure of the phytoplankton community of the estuary of the river Marapanim was represented by four divisions: Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Dinophyta and Bacillariophyta, which is the group with higher taxonomic richness, with emphasis on species such as Rhizosolenia setigera, Dimeregramma minor, Chaetoceros sp. and Bacillaria paxillifera. Diatoms were frequent and dominant in both seasonal periods, was recorded the presence of marine planktonic species nerítica, marine planktonic oceanic, coastal and marine planktonic marine-nerítica ocean. Already the phytoplankton biomass showed higher rates in the rainy season, which may be related to the high concentration of nutrients brought by continental drainage. In the period studied was possible to observe that the rainfall regime exercised significant influence on the composition and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a), which can be considered the main factor controlling the dynamics of these organisms in the estuary of the river Marapanim. A Zona Costeira representa a transição entre ambientes terrestres e marinhos, os quais são conhecidos pela sua grande produção de biomassa e capacidade de sustentar importantes estoques pesqueiros. Inserida neste contexto, encontra-se a comunidade fitoplanctônica, a qual constitui a base da cadeia alimentar do meio aquático. O estudo da composição e distribuição temporal de tal comunidade tem fundamental importância para a compreensão dos principais mecanismos de funcionamento dos ecossistemas aquáticos. Este trabalho objetiva caracterizar a estrutura e a dinâmica da comunidade fitoplanctônica e sua variação espaço-temporal, ao longo do estuário do rio Marapanim (Pará, Brasil). Para cumprir tal objetivo foram realizadas coletas nos meses de setembro/2006 e fevereiro/2007 em dois perfis de amostragem distribuídos ao longo do estuário. As amostras para o estudo qualitativo foram obtidas a partir de arrastos horizontais na subsuperfície da água, enquanto que aquelas destinadas à quantificação da clorofila foram obtidas através de coleta direta. A estrutura da comunidade fitoplanctônica do estuário do Rio Marapanim esteve representada por quatro divisões: Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Dinophyta e Bacillariophyta, sendo este último, o grupo com maior riqueza taxonômica, com destaque para: Rhizosolenia setigera, Dimeregramma minor, Chaetoceros sp. e Bacillaria paxillifera. As diatomáceas foram freqüentes e dominantes em ambos os períodos sazonais, tendo sido registrada a presença de espécies marinhas planctônicas neríticas, marinhas planctônicas oceânicas, marinhas litorais e marinhas planctônicas nerito-oceânicas. Já a biomassa fitoplanctônica apresentou maiores índices no período chuvoso, fato que pode estar relacionado à elevada concentração de nutrientes trazidos pela drenagem continental e pelo mangue.
