This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed in coastal communities through Travel Program "Light in the Amazon" in order to describe the perception that hypertensive bordering this region have about HA. The research was conducted in two stages the first with a socioeconomic questionnaire and the second stage with subjective questionnaires applied only to riparian hypertensive. Responses developed through the analysis of the results left three units, namely: "Knowledge of Hypertension; Experience of hypertensive factors causing pressure elevation and the look of the riverside on the importance of prevention and treatment of disease." Know about the knowledge of riparian hypertensive, their ideas and their questions are needed to provide individualized care and propose a health intervention, taking into account the needs and peculiarities of this specific population. Through the responses of riparian hypertensive find that they have acquired knowledge with their experiences with hypertension on symptoms, however distorted thinking about hypertension and can not distinguish symptoms of the risk factors of the disease. Thus to have excellent health of the local population, the nursing professional as well as a good multidisciplinary health team is essential. Because through them can be made intervention strategies, encouraging people to associate their actions with the ways of seeing, feeling and answer their own life situations, so as to reflect on your health and lead to seeking alternative paths to transformation situations that will lead a better quality of life. In this respect, the role of nurses is essential, because care is considered a guiding principle of profession. Hipertensão arterial (HA) é uma doença crônica silenciosa que atinge a maioria da população brasileira, além disso, é um dos mais importantes fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento de doenças cardiovasculares, cerebrovasculares e renais, que são doenças com alta incidência de óbitos. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, realizado em comunidades ribeirinhas, através das viagens junto ao Programa “Luz na Amazônia” e que objetivou descrever a percepção que os ribeirinhos hipertensos da Região Amazônica têm em relação a HA. A pesquisa foi realizada em duas etapas, a primeira com um questionário socioeconômico e a segunda com questões subjetivas aplicadas apenas aos ribeirinhos hipertensos. Através das respostas desenvolveu-se a análise dos resultados a partir de três unidades tematicas, a saber: “conhecimento da hipertensão arterial ou pressão alta”; “Vivência e percepção dos ribeirinhos hipertensos sobre o descontrole da PA”; e “O olhar do ribeirinho sobre a importância da prevenção e tratamento da doença”. O conhecimento dos ribeirinhos hipertensos sobre HA, suas ideias e seus questionamentos, são necessários para prestar uma assistência individualizada e propor uma intervenção em saúde, levando em consideração as necessidades e as peculiaridades dessa população específica. Através das repostas dos ribeirinhos hipertensos, constatou-se que os mesmos têm um conhecimento adquirindo com a sua vivência diante da hipertensão e os sintomas, porém esse conhecimento é deturpado e não sabem distinguir sintomas dos fatores de risco da referida doença. Dessa forma, para se obter a excelência da saúde da população ribeirinha o profissional de enfermagem assim como uma boa equipe multidisciplinar de saúde é indispensável. Pois através deles podem ser feitas estratégias de intervenção, incentivando as pessoas a associarem suas ações com os modos de ver, de sentir e de responder suas próprias situações de vida, para assim refletir em sua saúde e levar a busca de caminhos alternativos para a transformação das situações que conduzam à melhor qualidade de vida.
