Mining activities involve the production of a lot of material without economic value. However the management of poor ore responds to a business strategy and has a provisional character, removal of overburden from the mining area and its disposal activities may have an adverse impact on the development of a mine, along with implications of economic, safety and environmental factors. The characteristics of the handling of overburden are significant today given the large volumes withdrawn in mining operations, greater scarcity of suitable areas are available, especially in older developments and increases demand from regulators. This situation demands a greater degree of planning for activities, constructions, operations and rehabilitation of the structures generated by the overburden operation. It was made into a documentary; research to collect related information about mined rock and overburden piles as well as the main procedures for carrying out the project covered topics such as geological research, deforestation, excavation, terrain, location, geometry, technological control, instrumentation, case study, design and classification. This paper presents the main stages and technical procedures necessary for the design of a project of a waste dump, considering the standards, recommendations, technical specifications as well as literature focused on case study for exemplifying the important points of the project, as stability analysis, site selection, geometry, definition, safety factors, storage capacity, taking into account that these are concerns that the designer and the executor must consider from the start of planning overburden pile. The system of classifying overburden pile was presents by the Canadian government in the work entitled “Mined Rock and Overburden Pile” (BC Mine Waste Rock Pile Research Committee, 1991). The system is based on careful evaluation of factors that can affect the physical stability of a pile. The evaluation of the batteries is made of a semi-quantitative manner and the result allows you to assign a particular category of pile, according to their potential for instability. These classes define a recommended level of effort to research, project, construction and monitoring of the overburden pile. |
