Resumo:
Polymer matrix composite materials were made using the following industrial wastes: red mud, kaolin, copper and fly ash. Mass proportions was established and ranged from 0 %, 5 %, 15 %, 25 % and 35 %, at a 100 mesh granulometry. Isophthalic polyester resin was utilized with initiator (proportion of 1 % v/v) and activator (proportion of 1.5 v/v). The preparation of the composite material followed the hand lay-up method. Mineralogic waste analysis was performed using XRD technique. Physical and flammability tests followed the parameters of the standards NBR 12,766 and ASTM D 635, as well as mechanical tensile test (ASTM D 3039) and flexure test (ASTM D 790). SEM technique was also used for the fracture analysis. Physical properties increased as the compositions increased, due to the gradual increase of density. Mechanical results were not expressive for flexure tests and thriving for tensile tests. All tested materials showed flame retardancy characteristics when compared to the standard recommendation, due mostly to the chemical and mineral composition of the wastes utilized for the composite materials.
