The reproductive parameters are important tools to elucidate ecological and evolutionary significance of inter-specific associations. This study focused on the symbiotic relationship between Periclimenes paivai, the facultative commensal partner-shrimp from the scyphozoan jellyfish Lychnorhiza lucerna, by population structure and reproductive parameters of the associated shrimps, as well as the correlation between these variables and the host’s size. The jellyfish and its associated shrimp were collected at the coast of São Paulo (Cananéia, Guarujá and Ubatuba) and Paraná (Paranaguá) states, Brazilian southern coast and in different occasions between 2008 to 2011. The sex and morphological parameters like the wet weight, total and carapace length were determined. Reproductive parameters were also analyzed like the sex ratio, fecundity and egg mass wet weight. The jellyfish bell diameter was obtained to test the correlation between host’s size and symbiont variables like the number of associated shrimp. From the 29 sampled jellyfish, 356 partner-shrimps were accounted (11 ± 10 / jellyfish), being Cananéia the locality with the highest number of shrimps per host (p < 0.001). No correlation was found between the size and of the host and number of symbionts. However, the shrimps collected at Cananéia and Paranaguá were bigger and showed higher fecundity than those at Ubatuba, which in contrast showed the highest reproductive output. Periclimenes paivai revealed higher values for fecundity and other reproductive parameters than the other species of the genus. The reproductive efficiency of P. paivai may be linked to its commensal life strategy and to host characteristics like the large volume of the jellyfish in relation to the shrimps, shelter, and probably abundant food resources. The pelagic environment was a possible evolutionary pressure resulting in high fecundity and the need to produce a high number of planktonic larvae to compensate the losses at the initial developmental stages. Os crustáceos marinhos são invertebrados que apresentam alta diversidade e diferentes estratégias de vida, muitas advindas de associações simbióticas com outros organismos em busca de proteção, abrigo, melhores recursos alimentares e reprodutivos. Os parâmetros reprodutivos de animais simbiontes são importantes ferramentas para entender as implicações ecológicas e evolutivas das associações inter-específicas. Este estudo investigou a relação simbiótica entre Periclimenes paivai, camarão classificado como comensal facultativo da cifomedusa Lychnorhiza lucerna através da estrutura populacional e parâmetros reprodutivos dos camarões associados, assim como por correlação entre essas variáveis e o tamanho do hospedeiro. As medusas e respectiva fauna associada foram coletadas no litoral dos estados de São Paulo (municípios de Cananéia, Ubatuba e Guarujá) e Paraná (município de Paranaguá), em diferentes ocasiões entre 2008 a 2011. O sexo foi determinado para todos os camarões, assim como variáveis morfológicas (peso úmido, comprimento total e da carapaça). A variáveis reprodutivas analisadas foram a razão sexual, fecundidade, peso da massa ovígera, volume dos ovos e investimento reprodutivo. O diâmetro das medusas foi obtido para testar correlações entre o tamanho do hospedeiro e variáveis da população de simbiontes, como o número de camarões associados. Um total de 29 medusas foram coletadas, abrigando 356 camarões (11 ± 10 / medusa), sendo que Cananéia apresentou a maior quantidade de hospedeiros por simbionte (p < 0,001). Não houve correlação significativa entre o tamanho da medusa e o número de camarões associados. Entretanto, os camarões coletados em Cananéia e Paranaguá foram maiores e apresentaram fecundidade mais elevada em relação a Ubatuba, que por sua vez apresentou o maior investimento reprodutivo. A espécie P. paivai apresentou os valores mais elevados de fecundidade e demais parâmetros reprodutivos do que as demais espécies do gênero. A eficiência reprodutiva de P. paivai deve estar associada ao modo de vida comensal do mesmo e características do hospedeiro como o grande volume da medusa em relação aos camarões, abrigo, recursos alimentares.
