Although geological surveys have detected some oil and natural gas at Para Maranhao basin, they were not exploited, because the exploration programs were focused on Campos basin and some others ones. However, political and economic changes of Brazilian petroleum industry led to a new scenario of increasing energy demands and new oil companies investors both of them looking for basins where hydrocarbons were already discovered but not exploited yet. Most of Para Maranhao geological data are from 70’s and 80’s decades and must be reviewed and renewed thus aiming the explotation. Data and literature showed a possible petroleum system with carbonates, which resembles some petroleum systems of Meso-Cenozoic age. Some geologists believe that Para Maranhao has geological features alike though not identical to Cretaceous Jubilee Field at Gana, which is a world class reserve. However, some authors are still debating which geological formation hosts the source rock. Such debate and doubts are focused on this work together with a geological description based on a bibliographical review of basin literature. |
