From the processes of codification and decoding of messages, we sought to provide a more significant learning of matrices to third-year high school students from the public school system in the municipality of Belém/PA. With a qualitative approach, the research used an evaluative questionnaire of the mathematical workshop developed in the school. The results show that the application of encryption helps in understanding the basic concepts of matrices in a dynamic and interesting way. O presente trabalho propõe uma alternativa metodológica ao ensino de matrizes baseada na utilização da criptografia, possibilitando uma abordagem diferenciada das comumente aplicadas em sala de aula. A partir dos processos de codificação e decodificação de mensagens, buscou-se proporcionar uma aprendizagem mais significativa de matrizes aos alunos do terceiro ano do Ensino Médio da rede pública de ensino no município de Belém/PA. Com uma abordagem qualitativa, a pesquisa utilizou um questionário avaliativo da oficina matemática desenvolvida na escola.
