The subjects, after written consent, were submitted to an interview, where information referring to the socio-demographic characteristics and past risk behavior was obtained; pregnant women were excluded from this investigation. The information obtained was coded, typed and analyzed in a database created with the Microsoft Excel and EPI INFO 2002 programs. The subjects of the study were 153 individuals, 47.1% being male, the predominating age range was between 21 and 30 years, with 39.8 % of the participants; 94.1% resided in Belém and 64.8% attended High School or College; 44.5% were unemployed and 52.3% affirmed having a family income between 2-5 minimum wages. Among 78.4 % of the subjects, a risky sexual relation was the main reason for doing the anti-HIV serology at the CTC. Among past risk behaviors, 49.1 % of the subjects declared to have only one sexual partner during the last six months before the interview, and 66.7 % used preservatives irregularly; 88. 2% of the subjects informed having tattoos, and the use of illicit endovenous drugs was referred only by 1.3%. Exclusively heterosexual exposition was the category in which 67.9 % of the subjects included themselves. Results obtained in this investigation allow the conclusion that young men and women, most of them heterosexuals, equally seek out the CTC in Belém to make the anti HIV test. About half of the cases belong to low income families, and these refer only one sexual partner in the past six months before the interview. Notwithstanding this last characteristic portrayed in the population studied, roughly two-thirds do not practice safe sexual relations, opting for the insecure practice of irregular use of preservatives, which means that risky sexual relation is the main reason for the CTC pursuit. Probably this behavior is a factor contributing for the expressive rates of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus in the investigated population. Esta investigação foi realizada no período de janeiro a março de 2005 e teve como objetivos estudar o perfil sociodemográfico e comportamental dos indivíduos que procuram espontaneamente o Centro de Testagem e Aconselhamento (CTA), do município de Belém, Pará, assim como, avaliar a freqüência de infecção pelo vírus da imunodeficiência humana nessa população e possíveis fatores de risco para a infecção. Os participantes, após consentimento escrito, foram submetidos a uma entrevista para a obtenção de informações referentes às características sociodemográficas e antecedentes comportamentais de risco, sendo excluídas as grávidas desta investigação. As informações obtidas foram codificadas, digitadas e analisadas em um banco de dados criado nos programas Microsoft Excel e EPI-INFO 2002. Participaram do estudo 153 indivíduos, sendo 47,1% do sexo masculino; a faixa etária predominante foi de 21 a 30 anos, com 39,8% dos participantes; 94,1 % residiam em Belém e 64,8% cursavam o ensino médio ou superior; 44,5 % encontravam-se empregados e 52,3% afirmaram ter renda familiar entre 2 e 5 salários mínimos. Em 78,4% dos participantes, a relação sexual de risco foi o principal motivo para a realização da sorologia anti-VIH no CTA. Entre os antecedentes de comportamento de risco, 49,1 % declararam ter somente um parceiro sexual nos últimos 6 meses anteriores à entrevista e 66,7% faziam uso irregular do preservativo. Informaram ter tatuagem 88,2% dos participantes e a acupuntura já havia sido praticada por apenas 5,2 %. A exposição exclusivamente heterossexual foi a categoria na qual se incluíram 67,9% dos participantes. Os resultados obtidos nesta investigação permitem concluir que, homens e mulheres jovens, em sua maioria heterossexuais, igualmente buscam o CTA de Belém para realização do teste anti-VIH. Cerca de metade dos casos pertencem a famílias com baixa renda e referem apenas um parceiro sexual nos últimos 6 meses anteriores à entrevista. Apesar desta afirmação ser da metade dos participantes, no entanto, cerca de dois terços não praticam relações sexuais seguras, uma vez que, fazem uso irregular de preservativos e esta prática insegura, ou seja, a relação sexual de risco é o principal motivo para a procura pelo CTA.
