Pre­menstrual syndrome (PMS) is consisted in a joint of symptoms related with menstrual cycle. Objecting to analyze the prevalence and the intensity of the PMS’ symptoms in Medical High School, a transversal descriptive between April and May of 2011. 123 female students participated of this study, they were set in two groups: one group with 58 students of the first year of the Medical High School and other group containing 65 students of the last year of the Medical High School of Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal do Pará (FAMED/UFPA). Two instruments were used to collect the data­base: the social demographic questionnaire and the pre­menstrual symptoms scale for PMS diagnosis criteria using the last three menstrual cycles. The statistical analysis was made by Qui quadrado test, G test and Fisher exact test, adopting p<0.05. Results: The age group found was between 17 and 35 years old, 95% of them were singles, 62.5% of them lives with their parents, 38.8% of them were using hormonal oral contraceptives (HOC) and more than a half of the students of the last year of the Medical High School were using any kind of HOC. The prevalence of the PMS was of 10.3% and 4.6% respectively for the first­year and last­year of the High School, while the mean prevalence was of 7.31%. Inside the clinical aspects, the principal symptom referred was the anxiety (78%), easy breathless (72.4%), severe humor variety (71.5%), emotional instability (71.5%), the increase of the sweet ingestion will (71.5%) and increase of acne (71.5%).It was found significant different associations for each students group. In the group of the first year students, it was found that the HOC use and symptoms mammals pain and the increase of sweet ingestion will. In this group there was an association between presence or absence of the PMS and the symptoms easy breathless, lumbar pain, the increase of the sweet ingestion will, social isolation, nervous tension, discouragement, severe humor variety, anger, anxiety and emotional instability. In the last year group was found an association between that HOC use and symptoms weight gain, and the increase of the appetite. Although this group showed an association between and the presence or absence of PMS and the symptoms anger, anxiety, emotional instability, depression and the increase of the appetite. Also was found significant association between the year of the student and the increase of the acne. It was concluded that the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome prevalence is variable, depending of the year of the High School. The results need more new searches that include PMS symptoms repercussions at university and social life of those students.
