Methods: This is an observational, descriptive and quantitative study conducted in the joint housing of a public hospital located in the city of Belém, Pará. The target population consisted of adolescent postpartum women. In the data collection, a structured form was used based on the 10 steps for the success of Breastfeeding, which defines the criteria for the full functioning of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. RESULTS: The age of 17 years corresponds to 40% of the sample, 62% were from the interior of Pará, 51% had 0 to 8 years of schooling, 53% of the interviewees had a normal birth, 87% of the mothers were primiparous. About prenatal care 72% of adolescents had 6 or more consultations and 51% reported having received guidelines on breastfeeding during prenatal care. The majority of mothers (57%) reported that the baby was put on skin-to-skin contact in the first hour of life, 64% reported needing help from a professional in the hospital to breastfeed, and 98% of the mothers were satisfied with the professional breastfeeding support from the hospital. A proportion of 62% of the infants were exclusively breastfed, receiving no supplement and 100% of the mothers affirmed any type of artificial nozzle offer to their child. As for the signs of identification of the need to put the baby to breastfeed, 60% revealed that they placed it to the breast with the crying signal. Conclusion: Primiparity, schooling and type of delivery were observed as factors that discouraged the practice of breastfeeding. Objetivo: Analisar conhecimentos e prática de mães adolescentes sobre a importância do aleitamento materno segundo critérios da Iniciativa Hospital Amigo da Criança. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo de caráter observacional, descritivo e quantitativo realizado no alojamento conjunto de um hospital público localizado na cidade de Belém, Pará. A população-alvo foi constituída por puérperas adolescentes. Na coleta dos dados foi utilizado um formulário semiestruturado baseado nos 10 passos para o sucesso do Aleitamento Materno. Resultados: A idade de 17 anos, corresponde a 40% da amostra, 62% eram do interior do Pará, 51% tinham de 0 a 8 de anos de estudo, 53% das entrevistadas tiveram parto normal, 87% das puérperas eram primíparas. Acerca do pré-natal 72% das adolescentes realizaram 6 ou mais consultas e 51% referiram receber orientações sobre aleitamento durante o pré-natal. A maioria das mães (57%) revelou que o bebê foi colocado em contato pele a pele na primeira hora de vida, 64% revelaram precisar da ajuda de algum profissional no hospital para realizar a amamentação e 98% das puérperas se sentiram satisfeitas com o apoio para amamentar, de um profissional advindo do hospital. Uma parcela de 62% dos bebes encontrava-se em aleitamento materno exclusivo e 100% das mães afirmaram nenhuma oferta de tipo de bico artificial ao seu filho. Quanto aos sinais de identificação da necessidade em pôr o bebe para mamar, 60% revelaram que o colocaram ao seio com o sinal de choro.
