Of the Federal University of Pará. As a methodological procedure, the research is reflected as exploratory, with a qualitative approach, being a case study. In order to obtain data and collect information on the subject, a bibliographical research on photographic images bank was adopted, as well as meetings with researchers from the GPHS, in which the necessary elements were defined for the database and the identification of the material Available for incorporation into that bank. As results, it was observed that the image bank is an essential tool for the management of photographic images that are important sources of information to be used in diverse works. In addition, nonproprietary BIBLIVRE software was defined for the management of photographic information, and guidelines were drawn up for the creation of a photographic database of basic sanitation images for GPHS. Finally, it is concluded that the appropriate use of an image bank for organizing, storing and managing information is of fundamental relevance for the search and retrieval of information whether proprietary or non-proprietary, since institutions need secure sources for their researches. Estudo sobre a criação de banco de imagens fotográficas, com o objetivo de analisar a organização de imagens fotográficas na área do saneamento básico para o uso como fonte de informação no desenvolvimento de atividades técnico-científico do Grupo de Pesquisa e Saneamento Básico (GPHS), da Universidade Federal do Pará. Como procedimento metodológico, a pesquisa se reflete como exploratória, com abordagem qualitativa, sendo um estudo de caso. Para a obtenção dos dados e coleta de informações sobre o tema adotou-se a pesquisa bibliográfica sobre banco de imagens fotográficas, assim como foram realizadas reuniões com pesquisadores do GPHS, em que foram definidos os elementos necessários ao banco de dados e a identificação do material disponível para incorporação nesse banco. Como resultados, observou-se que o banco de imagens é uma ferramenta imprescindível para o gerenciamento de imagens fotográficas que são fontes de informação importantes para serem usadas em trabalhos diversos. Além disso, foi definido o software não proprietário BIBLIVRE para a gestão da informação fotográfica, sendo traçadas diretrizes para criação de um banco de imagens fotográficas em saneamento básico para o GPHS.
